Below the incomplete Gupta house, is another half chowki which has now been extended with new construction methods. The ground floor of the old part is closed now and only the 1st floor is used. The first floor of the old part serves as the ground floor of the new part due to the sloping terrain. This condition makes the family reside together on the same floor. Creating a new house opened up more possibilities of modernized spaces for the family. As parts of the extended spaces are rented, this also adds to the family income. Revenue from rental properties is also in many ways fueling the construction boom. The 1st floor of the new part is leased to students in this case. The older part has only two rooms with a verandah continuing in front of both rooms. Mrs Gupta takes care of her mother-in-law who spends most of her time in the old part of the house. The verandah of the old house is lined with wooden windows, which also allows it to function as a room when the windows are shut. This allows the family to regulate porosity in the house as well. The little girl Ananlys spends time either in the central courtyard or in the verandah. In spite of the newly constructed extension, the family spends a large part of their time in the older parts due to the thermal properties of the materials here.
