residential cluster 3
As one descends the steps of the Fort temple, towards the Shiv Mandir and then makes a left, one arrives at a cluster of houses that sport hybrid construction techniques. This cluster has one half chowkinuma house and two others that have been incrementally extended. While most people retain atleast part of the old house, the new extensions are made with reinforced cement concrete (RCC). This is due to a variety of reasons. The first being the RCC house is seen as ‘pakka’ and akin to the aspirational city house while the old house is considered ‘kutcha’. The second reason, is due to the short supply of timber and stone for construction. Forests are now under the government and people are forbidden to use any wood from it. Quarrying has also stopped in most places. There is no alternative ecology created to harness natural building materials. This is the reason people have to resort to unsustainable materials like cement and concrete. The old house however is retained and still used for a variety of functions.
