chowkinuma house
The big Chowkinuma house is owned by Mr. Rajeev Gupta and Mrs. Meena Gupta. Rajeev is an Engineer, whereas Meena is a homemaker and a tailor by passion. During the weekdays, Rajeev drives off to work in Mandi at 9 in the morning while Meena starts preparing her sewing machine. Her morning activities mainly take place in the Kitchen, in the newly built extension to the Chowki. The newer extension has 2 floors, with the ground floor merging with the first floor of the chowki. Meena’s sewing machine is placed in a small room on the first floor of the old house, overlooking the courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by the old kitchen, a few rooms and storage spaces. However, with the new extension built with much more modern utilities and two large bedrooms, the chowki’s rooms are now used mainly for storing old antiquities the family keeps. Bees and sparrows have now occupied the space. The chowki once had 30 family members living within it, however the hustle and bustle no longer exists with only Rajeev and Meena calling it home now. Their son works in an IT firm in Noida, whereas their Daughter is now in Shimla most of the year. Rajeev and Meena hope to give one of the floors of the newer house for rent once it is completed.
